Protocol Management in Computer Networking presents a systematic approach to understanding and managing communication protocols and computer networks. Philippe Byrnes proposes a management model derived from control-systems engineering, applying it to networks ranging from simple LANs to the Internet. The book begins with the physical layer, covering communication channels, signals, modulation and error-control techniques. It then examines the data-link layer, including SDLC, HDLC, PPP and 802 LAN protocols. The later sections focus on end-to-end communication, especially TCP/IP, SNA/APPN, X.25, Frame Relay and OSI. The final part discusses the management of interconnected networks through bridging, switching, routing and tunneling.
