challenges the traditional view that Japan under the Tokugawa shogunate (1603–1868) was an isolated nation closed to the outside world. Instead, he argues that the bakufu actively engaged in a sophisticated system of diplomacy designed to legitimize its political authority, maintain domestic stability and secure Japan’s position within East Asia.
