embryonic chick and quail corneas (stage 18 until hatching) were studied histologically using 2 fixatives and 3 stains. measurements of the central thickness of corneal stroma, using light microscope, showed that for both species there was a gradual increase in thickness until stage 38 (the time of appearance of descemet's membrane and just before the appearence of bowman's membrane),followed by a marked decrease until stage 41, then a further increase until hatching .
