The distribution of suspended particulates plays an essential part in relation to the biological and chemical processes occuring in shelf seas .for exemple , chemical absorption and desorption of elements and compounds by particulates play a significant role in cycling processes and may be important in the transport of some heavy metals .cohesive sediment suspensions also give rise to engineering problems , such as maintenance dredging problems in many estuaries and harbours .
