Modern Power Station Practice, Volume 7 – Operation and Efficiency provides a detailed technical treatment of the operation, commissioning, economic performance, safety and maintenance of power stations. It begins with the commissioning and initial operation of boilers and turbo-generators, including commissioning procedures, plant organisation, safety requirements, start-up and operational practices. The second major section focuses on power-station efficiency and economic operation. It covers heat balance, heat rate, operating costs, incremental costs, merit-order operation, system security, load dispatching, frequency and voltage control, plant outages and fuel requirements. The final section deals with safety and maintenance, including legal requirements, safety organisation, maintenance planning, preventive maintenance, plant records, statutory inspections, spare parts and maintenance training. The overall objective is to improve plant availability, reliability, operational safety and generating efficiency.
