Modern Power Station Practice, Volume 5 – Chemistry and Metallurgy provides a comprehensive treatment of the chemical and metallurgical aspects of power-station operation. It begins with power-station fuels, particularly coal and oil, including their preparation, classification, sampling, analysis, storage and utilization. The book then examines corrosion and water chemistry, with particular attention to feedwater, boiler water, steam purity and corrosion occurring in boiler plant. It also discusses water treatment systems, including softening, evaporation, demineralization and cooling-water treatment. Another important section deals with plant cleaning and inspection, including methods used to maintain boilers and other power-station equipment. The final part focuses on metallurgy, covering engineering materials, steels, non-ferrous alloys, welding, material testing, corrosion and the selection of materials for power-station equipment.
