Modern Power Station Practice, Volume 3 – Mechanical (Turbines and Auxiliary Equipment) provides a comprehensive technical treatment of the mechanical equipment used in conventional power stations. It begins with the thermodynamic principles and theory of steam turbines, including turbine cycles, nozzles, moving blades, efficiency and performance. It then examines the construction and operation of different turbine types, including steam, gas and hydraulic turbines. The book also covers the main turbine auxiliary systems, such as gland and sealing systems, lubrication equipment, governors and governing gear. Particular attention is given to feedwater heating systems, regenerative heating, feed heaters, deaerators and associated calculations. The following section deals with condensers and cooling-water plants, including condenser construction, circulating-water systems and cooling equipment. The final chapter describes essential station services and mechanical plant, including water services, compressed air, heating and ventilation, pipework, cranes and lifting equipment.
