The first part establishes the MHD approximation and derives the basic equations governing conducting fluids. It introduces Ohm's law for moving conductors and explains how fluid motion can transport, distort, or diffuse magnetic fields. A major theme is the distinction between the kinematic and dynamic aspects of MHD. The kinematic treatment examines how fluid motion affects the magnetic field, including magnetic induction, magnetic diffusion, magnetic flux conservation, and the magnetic Reynolds number. The dynamic treatment considers the reverse interaction: how magnetic fields exert forces on the conducting fluid. Shercliff then examines important phenomena such as the Lorentz force, Maxwell stresses, Hartmann flow, Hartmann layers, magnetic pressure, magnetic tension, and Alfvén waves. These concepts are illustrated through classical analytical problems and applications such as electromagnetic flowmeters.
