This volume is a substantial collection of research papers presented at the fourth international symposium on computing methods in applied sciences and engineering, held at versailles in december 1979. its central theme is the use of numerical computation, mathematical modelling and computational algorithms for scientific and engineering problems. the contributions cover a broad range of computational mathematics and engineering, particularly finite element methods, numerical solution of partial differential equations, fluid mechanics, structural mechanics, optimization, nonlinear problems, inverse problems and iterative methods for large systems of equations. the book is particularly concerned with computational treatment of difficult mathematical models involving boundary-value problems, free-boundary problems, navier–stokes equations, incompressible flows, transonic flows, diffusion, plasma physics and magnetic problems. the google books record, for example, identifies articles dealing with forming problems, fictitious-region methods, finite elements, conjugate-gradient algorithms, cholesky factorization and incompressible-flow calculations. thus, the volume belongs primarily to numerical analysis and computational applied mathematics, with strong applications to mechanical engineering, fluid mechanics and computational physics.
