The book is organized around the relationship between high-voltage electricity infrastructure and land-use planning. It begins with an introduction to the development of high-voltage electricity installations and the main planning issues associated with energy infrastructure. The book then examines the electricity distribution and transmission system in England and Wales, including planning procedures, legislation, environmental impact assessment, safety issues, and electromagnetic fields. It also discusses the development of the land-use planning system, sustainable development, public participation, and the role of local planning authorities. The study presents a methodological framework for analysing high-voltage electricity policies and examines existing planning policies across England and Wales. Several case studies are then explored in urban, rural, and mixed urban-rural areas to identify the different environmental, social, and territorial challenges associated with high-voltage installations. Finally, the book provides a comparative analysis of these case studies and investigates how policies are developed to protect landscapes, residential areas, and the environment while supporting territorial development. The concluding chapter summarizes the main findings and discusses the future implications of planning policies for high-voltage electricity infrastructure.
