Compaction had a historical evolution in the second half 20th century. After start using vibratory rollers, whichperformances follow the needs of road and rail trackconstruction, a tremendous development in knowledgeoccurred. The difficulty of compaction of materials andtheir properties are better evaluated. Improvements arestill progressing nowadays with high technologicaldevelopments among manufacturers, both to enhancecompaction efficiency and quality management using embarkeddevices. In parallel new apparatus for in situ qualitycontrol emerge. However, specifications are stillformulated differently from country to country at Europeanlevel, although the same quality is required. It was therefore important, under the auspices of theEuropean Technical Committee ETC 11 of the InternationalSociety for Soil Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering(ISSMGE), to provide an exchange between experts andpractitioners from different countries, mainly on theaspects: modelling and properties of materials, andcompaction management and continuous control. This was the aim of the workshop held in Paris, in May2000, and of the proceedings presented here.
