It is well known that a load instantly applied to a beam causes dynamic effect on it. such sudden loading can cause deflections and stresses ot about twice higher in magnitude as when the load is applied statically considering a bridge being crossed by a moving vehicle at normal speed, the load carried by the bridge is neither static nor instantaneous but between the two. therefore in addition to the static stresses in the bridge components, there will be an increase in stresses which is caused by the movement of the load. this increase is called the dynamic allowance for traffic loading or simply the impact factor.
