Indonesian engineers have developed a new foundation system based on a grid of short length cylinders placed into the ground and connected at the surface by a thin, lightly reinforced concrete slab. many structures have been kuilt on these foundations in areas of poor subsoil conditions. included are the jakarta airport and its main access road. as yet the system has not been used outside of indonesia and little is known of the design principles involved. in this thesis the system is reviewed under all its known features, some suggestions for the working mechanism are made along with a detailed report on the full scale fiel4 test carried out by the l.c.p.c. in jakarta. it is concluded from the laboratory tests that the pipes under the footing do not seem to have sensibly contributed to improve either the bearing capacity of the footing or its differential settlements, at least up to the critical load, the system it is recommended that more information should be obtained regarding the pre and post-construction stages of the case histories reported before any further work should be undertaken. once this information is obtained, centrifugal modelling is then recommended to develop the concept further and to confirm or reject the benefits of the foundation system.
