Soil has always been a material used in civil engineering construction, its principle advantages being availability and low price. However, its mechanical properties are not always satisfactory and this can lead to problems during construction, particularly with large structures. One of the main objectives of civil engineers is often then to improve the mechanical properties of soils whilst keeping the advantage of its availability and low cost.
