Nitrates and nitrites are major contaminants of the ecosystem. These coumpounds have various toxic effets, the principal on being methemoglobinia or the reversible inactivation of hemoglobin. First this research concerns the effects of ammonium nitrate administration after short term exposure, we observe over and above methemoglobinemia a decrease in hemoglobin and hematocrit rates, and an increase in seric nitrats as well as an increase in the spleen weight and its activity, we have also observed an increase in glutathion rate followed by the apparition of necroses in the liver. Then we carried out a study on the nitrogen oxydes toxicology impact on the health of the population which is submitted to these chemical polluting (Asmidal workers, inhabitants of the El-Bouni aera and inhabitants of Annaba city). This has been achieved through the determination of the nitrat content within both blood and urine as well as methemoglobin content within blood.
