The present study consists of an ecological investigation in the béni-Abbès/Ougarta area of the North West Dahara. Phytosociological units are described, the main écological factors highlighted and additional ecological observations made, particulary in relation to dynamic aspects of the vegetation. The Béni-Abbès region was chosen because of the existence of a smail research centre and thd closeness of the five major desert habitats: saline and mountains wadis (dry river beds), djebel (rocky mountains), daya (clay-sands depressions) and erg (dunes). Data collection was based on intensive field word during which 310 quadrats were recorded ninety-four for the non-saline wadi, seventy-six for the djebel, forty for the daya, fifty each for the and the saline wadi. he environmental data set consisted of mine factors for the 310 quadrats and an additional three factors were computed for daya, erg and saline habitats. Vegetation units were defined usingdboth the Braun-Blanquet system and a divisive classification technique .
